This follow-up adventure to the excellent Tangle Tower once again delivers on a promise of smart writing, fun characters, and approachable mystery solving

Considering the fact that the classic point-and-click adventure has had a true renaissance period in the last generation, mostly thanks to indie studios who were obviously raised on them, gamers who appreciate the genre have a multitude of choices to pick from in the eShop. Whether you’re looking for something focused more on mystery, classic LucasArts-style humor, or a style that’s more contemporary, there are options to suit just about any taste. Much like its predecessor, The Mermaid Mask is here to instead offer you a compelling mix of all the above.

In the game you’ll be guiding the investigation of Detective Grimoire and his sassy assistant Sally, called in to solve a perplexing murder mystery. Working your way through the many rooms of The Mortuga Submarine, you’ll be spending your time interviewing an odd assortment of colorful characters, solving a surprisingly varied collection of puzzles, and putting together a picture of whodunnit. Each character is brought to life by both excellent voice acting and some whip-smart dialogue, as well as the game’s very distinctive art style.

An additional bonus for Switch 2 owners is that more so than most of the titles I’ve played on the system with mouse control support, this game is actually well-suited to them. Even OG Switch owners have a leg up on players from other consoles though, as in addition to controller support you’ll also have motion and touchscreen controls as options, making it easy to find your preferred style no matter where or how you’ll be playing. Given that some of the game’s puzzles involve careful manipulation of objects, some of which will require a little precision, more so than the typical adventure of this kind, these efforts are appreciated. While any title in this genre will have certain points of frustration where you can get stuck, the quality of the overall presentation and sheer entertainment value of the game’s dialogue help carry this over the finish line towards the front of the collective pack.
