Reviews:
  • While co-op space survival has been done, This Means Warp’s roguelike unpredictability steps it up a notch

As noted in another review from today, working with an existing formula and finding success is undoubtedly a challenge. In the case of This Means Warp, the subgenre in question is co-op space survival, which has a few different representatives on Switch of varying quality. After putting this one through the paces the news is pretty good though, among its brethren (that I’ve played) I think this may be the most challenging (but generally fair) and polished of the bunch. The big differentiator I believe is a pretty effective amount of randomness in each run between the additional crew you may bump into, gear that you can find or buy, and attribute boosters you’ll need to carefully assign to your stations to try to make yourself a powerhouse, a bit of a turtle, or something in between. In particular it’s a challenge early on to understand how different equipment will work for you in practice since the attention of you and your crew (whether other people playing locally, over the internet [Crossplay, woohoo], or working with AI) will always be split. That really means to find success you’ll need to develop effective strategies to keep your ship from getting blasted to pieces while keeping the pressure on to wreck anyone in your way. Probably the most fully-conceived I’ve played in this subgenre, This Means Warp is a challenge to your coordination but can be quite rewarding when you get deep into a run.
