A great mix of retro flair, some solid Metroidvania beats, a bit of attitude, and a boy and his bike

When I saw the pretty thoroughly indie movie Turbo Kid about a decade ago, I didn’t imagine that there would ever be a video game based on it. That said, while they may have failed to try to strike while the iron was hot, the developers of this pretty unique Metroidvania have certainly made the most of its post-Apocalyptic setting, and some key features to help make the game distinctive. Starting out, you may not get the full feel for this, as you’re initially stuck on foot, merely trying to get some essential equipment like a machete which will help you break through barriers. Once you get access to your bike though, the game opens up to feel pretty unique.

For the most part there’s a very classic feel to much of the stage design, bad guys and creatures you’ll need to work through, and flow of things. Along your way you’ll discover hidden areas if you’re observant and curious, and these will typically give you some bonus cash, a heart piece, or perhaps some type of in-universe lore to enjoy if you can find them, or sometimes survive them. The game isn’t necessarily outright hard, but you can’t be caught napping either since your enemies will periodically surprise you.

What absolutely stands out though is not just how your bike helps you get around faster, and gives you access to new areas, but how the developers really went the extra mile with it. Just playing around and doing some simple stunts is fun at first, but the fact that there are special in-game events in places where you’ll use those skills for bonuses was unexpected, and really helped to establish how unique an overall experience this is. Throw in the powerful weapons and abilities that you’ll discover the deeper in you go, ones that you’ll absolutely need to beat some of the very formidable enemies and bosses you’ll face, and the game is able to take the familiar beats you know and simply make them feel fresh again. While its pixel art looks and quirks may not make it a mainstream darling, there’s something that feels special in the DNA of this game that should make it memorable for those that take the plunge.
