Sharing common elements with some other survival games in the eShop, the problem here is that it’s missing much and adds little
Loading up Ultra Pixel Survive it isn’t tough to see the inspiration of other survival sims, from Terraria to even the likes of Kingdom Two Crowns, and undoubtedly others. After playing for about 10 minutes what immediately jumps out at you is that there isn’t a whole lot here to work with, only a few environments you’ll find yourself in repeating the same tasks every day, trying to collect resources, build defenses and a base of operations as you can, and then fighting off monsters that will show up once night falls. It’s a familiar formula but what seems odd here is that even with all of the titles that have pushed the subgenre forward over the years Ultra Pixel Survive is very thin on overall content and doesn’t seem to really have anything notable of its own to add to the mix. There’s no story, you’re given little to no direction when you start out, and really the only incentive to grind is to unlock new characters in different classes to play with. Unfortunately that puts it in an odd spot, too simplistic and dull for people who’ve played better fare in the space to date, and less accessible than average for people new to the genre and looking to understand what the excitement is all about.
