80s nostalgia and some vibes from other retro media can’t quite compensate for quirks and some odd puzzles
Since there are now so many classically-styled adventures out there on the Switch it’s become essential to include some element that helps define the game to build some appeal. In that area Unusual Findings makes a smart play, tapping some 80s nostalgia and feels from shows like Stranger Things to help pull you in. Where it kind of drops the ball is in trying to stand out once it gets you there though. As interfaces go this is roughly in the middle but has a tendency towards being a bit clunky but the problem is moreso the puzzles and general structure. There’s a real exhaust all of your limited options vibe to finding items and working out how to get through to the next stage in the game and that tends to rob you of your sense of accomplishment, not finding success through being clever but my merely being thorough and finally working out where you were meant to go and what you were meant to do. If the retro trip is enough to get you excited there’s enough here to be fun, just tame your expectations for something notable otherwise.
