Any excuse to return to Vampire Survivors is usually welcome, but this treasure trove of Castlevania content is the best yet

While it seems as if Konami has lost interest in making new Castlevania games, it has been great to continue to see the franchise pop up in other forms. The Netflix anime-style series was rock-solid, but for me the pinnacle was the Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC. Taking an amazing indie title, one that was obviously influenced by Castlevania in the first place, and dropping in so many staples of the classic series, was a match made in gaming heaven. Now, with a new DLC pack dropping for Vampire Survivors, gamers are getting another way to enjoy some elements of the influential franchise in yet another form.

For those unfamiliar with Vampire Survivors, it may take a moment to wrap your head around its gameplay since it is very different. Best described as a roguelike dodge-em-up, your goal is to survive waves of enemies by powering yourself up with a variety of weapons and modifiers that will help you weather the storm, though the ability to dodge and weave through the hordes absolutely comes in handy. This DLC doesn’t do anything to alter that formula, but it throws in loads of elements that should be familiar to fans of that classic with unlockable characters, trademark weapons, some great music tracks, and a fair number of surprises as well for the persistent.

The thing is, as you’d expect with pretty well any DLC package, since this doesn’t fundamentally change the base gameplay, I doubt it would be enough to convert anyone who isn’t already a Vampire Survivors fan. That said, if it’s a game that you enjoyed, but feel like you pretty well burned through completely, this is an excellent excuse to return to it once again. As far as I’m concerned they can add Castlevania to just about everything at this point and I’d be happy if these are the results they’re going to get.
