Collections are always a tricky proposition, and this is no different with about a 50/50 of good and forgettable included
Moreso than usual, this collection of arcade titles is a very mixed bag indeed. When I first saw its line-up, which includes Andro Dunos and Ganryu (both of which have sequels I’ve already reviewed individually and were pretty solid), I held out some hope it could be a collection of bangers. Unfortunately, that very much wasn’t the case, but depending on your tastes there could be enough here to make it worthwhile. Getting the bad out of the way you have Bang Bead and FlipShot, both pretty weak attempts to copy elements of Windjammers that play out pretty miserably. Somewhere in the middle you have an oddity like Captain Tomaday, which has a traditional arcade shooter feel at its base combined with unusual controls that are hit and miss. Also in the middle-ish are Goal, Goal, Goal and NEO DriftOut which are decent implementations of soccer and rally racing, but probably don’t have enough depth to stick with for more than a play or two at a time. You finally then get to Ganryu and Andro Dunos, neither of which are as polished as their follow-ups (that are available individually) but that play reasonably well. All in all it’s at least a pretty eclectic mix, and I always appreciate the archival aspect of such collections, but given some of the competition out there this is going to end up pretty far down the list of priorities.
