Reviews:
  • There’s a cool sense of style to this slashing sort of roguelike beat-em-up, but it still feels a bit generic in the end

There’s no doubt that for many gamers the experience starts through the eyes, and that gets Warm Snow off to a generally good start. In terms of its visual style and overall presentation there’s no doubt it does a good job of pulling you in. Once it gets you there I’d say that the degree to which you’ll be impressed will likely be tied to your level of exposure in games it shares similarities with. I think to less seasoned fans who are perhaps a bit more used to traditional beat-em-ups may be a bit more lenient on it, as through that lens the game has a fair amount of variety, especially as you pick up new weapons and abilities. If you turn the dial of experience up and run into people who are roguelike fans who’ve spent a ton of hours on higher-quality titles in the space like Hades I think the level of excitement is more likely to drop a fair bit. Sure, there are a variety of endings and some opportunities to have fun with gameplay that is roughly in the difficulty sweet spot overall, but the longer you play I think the more you notice the combat stays a bit too much the same. You can change the weapons and abilities up, but Warm Snow feels more like a beat-em-up with the grind you’ll lock into rather than an experience that will keep demanding new techniques from you to keep rolling. It’s absolutely chock full of style, I just wish mechanically it offered a bit more variety.
