Credit to the people behind the original title, it doesn’t just differentiate itself with its cool visual style
Taking a stroll through the very stylized FPS experience that is XIII you can pretty easily see the ambition behind this title I missed out on back when it was released. While the models are a bit on the chunky side by more modern standards the harder lines that help to give it a comic book sort of look and feel are still there. What’s more at issue is the general style of play which I’d say would have probably been considered a bit on the odd side back in the day. It’s nice to have a mix of shooting, some stealth, and variety to keep things interesting but mechanically how things like grabbing a hostage to work as a means of keeping enemies from shooting you in some cases simply don’t always work very well. Throw in that the aiming controls simply don’t feel as crisp and clean as they do for its competition on the Switch and aside from those looking to reminisce over a game they enjoyed in its prime this may be tough to recommend other than for its novelty.
