This budget twin-stick shooter delivers a novel main game, but the magic is in 4 twin-stick takes on arcade classics
You know what I love? Twin-stick shooters. You know what I love even more? A budget twin-stick shooter than over-delivers… and that’s precisely what you have with Alien Death Mob. Now, what may seem a bit odd is that while I appreciate the pretty chaotic roguelike meets twin-stick arcade shooter I’d say it’s just good and reasonably challenging. What I’m here to rave about though is how well the developer behind this title understands classic arcade games, how to capture their spirit, and then how to shake them up quite wonderfully. In the Arcade section you’ll find one pretty straight-up homage to Robotron 2084 which may be among the most spot-on I’ve played and fun in its own right. The other 3 are all value-added remixes though, again of Robotron 2084 (adding just a bit more well-implemented chaos), Space Invaders (which is greatly improved just by adding twin-stick controls), and a banger update of the classic Berzerk of all things that did a great job of not just honoring but absolutely elevating an old-school classic. If you’re a retro gamer like me this is a load of fun, but even if you’re not obsessed with arcade classics you can’t argue with the bang you get here for pretty limited bucks.
