  • If you have the connection to support this “cloud play” game, it offers intense and compelling squad-based shooting

The Alien movies have always been built on intensity and a certain level of chaos that erupts at the moment a Xenomorph (let alone a pack of them) burst into the room. Though it may not be perfect, you can’t deny that Aliens: Fireteam Elite does a reasonably good job of capturing that experience in the form of a squad-based shooter. Now, there are caveats here that first this is a game running in the cloud, so you will absolutely need a consistent and fast connection to be able to get and keep it rolling to begin with. I would also point out that getting started is absolutely a whirlwind of confusion and doing things a bit badly for a few missions as you come to terms with the different classes, weapons, and pieces of equipment you’ll have the opportunity to use. That said, if you’re able to get into a squad with at least one person who knows what they’re doing and isn’t inclined to simply run off to leave you for dead you can learn pretty quickly. As would be appropriate for something squad-based you definitely need to be stick together and paying attention so you’re able to cover each other, as there are certain varieties that can knock someone down and do damage quickly if their squad mates aren’t ready to help. All in all, I’d say that to date this is the best multiplayer version of the Aliens franchise I’ve played in pretty well all aspects, though I’d note that aiming purely with the left analog stick and there being no support for even subtle motion-assisted aiming is a bummer as, when implemented well, that really helps to reduce the struggle to be quick and accurate with a controller. Still, if you’re a fan of solid co-op shooting this is a strong choice.
