How do you make a splash on the Switch eShop? You polish, polish, polish…
While I have played what feels like all manner of deck-based games on the Switch, I can’t say I’ve run into anything to date quite like Foretales. While still certainly having an emphasis on strategy, the real joy in the game is the adventure of it all. Managing your misfits and making the most of their abilities at the right times, and in the right ways, isn’t as cut and dry as you might initially think. There are almost always multiple ways to work through your challenges, whether in a positive way or a pretty negative one, and you can expect to carry what is sometimes the burden of your decisions with you. There are then times where choosing to defeat enemies with the sheer force of your reputation, whether noble or particularly brutal, can really help out in a pinch, so in general the normal strategy of trying to play the middle may not be so effective here. Of course, all of this is enhanced by the game’s gorgeous animated presentation, great voice work, and mild sense of humor in places. It won’t deliver much action, but if you’re looking for an engaging story that provides a satisfying amount of player agency in how things play out I’d highly recommend it.
