A visually gorgeous, and often touching, series of puzzles to be solved in order to connect a child to their mother
There’s no doubt that if you’re a fan of story-driven games that tug on your heart strings while moving you through compelling gameplay, this generation has delivered. Whether it’s in the form of visual novels, farm sims, RPGs, or adventures of various kinds the Switch has thankfully had plenty to enjoy. You can now add a new title in that mold to the mix with The Star Named EOS, with the gameplay focused on puzzle solving, but the meat of the enjoyment revolving around the connection between a mother and child through old photographs. In terms of the positives, for the most part those revolve around the very attractive and often ornate hand-drawn art, as well as generally intelligently-designed puzzles. If you’re a puzzle fan many are some sort of variation on things you’ve seen before most likely, but they’re implemented well, tend to look great, and patience will almost always win the day when tackling them. I also believe there’s a bit of a puzzle room spirit in play as well in most cases, with the expectation being that you’ll be observant of the environment to pick up on the clues around you. Thankfully, at least early on, it feels like the developers have put in some nudges that will prompt you to look around for specific symbols in specific ways, so I didn’t typically feel lost. The meat of the adventure though, is really the narrative and how you’ll use the photographs left to you as a means of unlocking each new stage. This mechanic feels smart, and the voice work that accompanies each new revelation is handled with warmth and love, helping to really sell the whole experience and compel you to keep going to move through it all. If you’re a fan of cozy gaming, don’t mind some brain-teasing puzzles, and enjoy titles with a little bit of mystery, this is an excellent choice.
