This addictive mix of dodge-em-up and roguelike sensibilities has many imitators but clearly stands as the best in the space
While it has taken entirely too long to get to Switch, opening the door to quite a number of also-rans that have tried to crib its style, Vampire Survivors is able to quickly establish itself as the king of the subgenre it helped put on the map without a doubt. For those who are unfamiliar it offers a pretty unique style of play that you’ll primarily only use one stick for, carefully choosing which power-ups to utilize and upgrade as you level up to help you survive in some tough environments. With a pretty wide variety of weapons, some of which are more direct projectiles, while others will do forms of AoE damage (with a bunch in between), you’ll pretty quickly find that you’ll be able to cater the style of play to your style, whatever it may be. Go full-on projectiles in all directions, turtle it up with defenses mixed with AoE knocking out enemies on all sides while you simply trying to dodge and avoid getting hit by anything, whatever you like really… and once you gain new heroes and things like Arcana you can even further customize things to make every run really feel like yours. The mix of intense action, periodic chests from elites and bosses that can sometimes pay off big (and possibly save your run), and a pretty substantial meta game are what can really get you hooked… but its the consistently smooth action that’s reasonably easy to follow (when you load up with particle effect weapons the visuals can get pretty wildly chaotic) that will keep you going for a while. An excellent port of an outstanding modern classic.
