Wonderfully pleasant, but also quite predictable, the strength here is in the characters you’ll be working to build relationships with
This entry in the Rune Factory series absolutely nails the typical beats you can count on. Some decent action RPG combat, a cultivation loop that can be satisfying if that’s your jam, and a generally chill overall atmosphere and vibe that are easy to lose enjoyable hours to. Now, having played the likes of Stardew Valley, which I would contend managed to perfect most areas of the farm/life sim RPG, I wouldn’t be inclined to say Rune Factory 3 gets even close to that overall standard of quality, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t without its charm. In this case it’s really the characters that you’ll be interacting with and trying to build relationships with that help to make it stand well on its own. There’s a certain charming nature to some of them, not feeling so much like cookie cutter character tropes as surprisingly rich personalities you’d like to spend more time with and dig into. If your focus tends to be more on that side of the coin, and less on the mechanical farming and combat elements, the game plays far better… otherwise it’s mostly just middling.
